Street League Skateboarding Hits the UIC Pavilion
Rob Dyrdek might be world renowned for his popular shows on MTV, but his roots as a professional skateboarder are what got him in the spotlight before his life was broadcast on basic cable. And now a professional skateboarders league he founded back in 2010 is making its way to Chicago.
Street League Skateboarding will make its debut in Chicago on Sunday, June 29 at the UIC Pavilion. The arena will be home to a custom built concrete skate plaza to host built by California Skateparks, and play host to a competition boasting $100,000 in prize money, along with the winner receiving an invite to the league's World Championships in August for a shot at an additional $200,000.
Chicago skating superstar Chaz Ortiz, who finished third at the Championships back in 2012, highlights a field of top skateboarders that includes 2013 World Champion Chris Cole, Ishod Wair, Nyjah Huston, Paul Rodriguez, Luan Oliveira and Shane O'Neill.
Along with securing Nike SB as a league sponsor in 2013, SLS secured a multi-year contract with FOX Sports 1 earlier this year to televise the final rounds of all their events. Sunday's coverage begins at 6pm. Tickets for the event range between $25-$45 (plus fees), and are available via Ticketmaster and the UIC Pavilion box office. Doors open at 2:40pm for preliminary rounds.
