Chicago-based photographer Kyle LaMere unveils his yearlong project, VISITORS tonight at Logan Square Auditorium (2539 N Kedzie Blvd). The party—aimed at raising money to publish the coffee table book—features performances by The Loneliest Monk, Matt ROAN, The Juliets, Kid Color and special guest DJ Jobot. Tickets start at $10. Joe Grimm, an interdisciplinary Chicago-based musician and composer, presents his work for circuit-bent 16 mm projectors that trigger light-sensitive audio electronics at Columbia University, 916 S. Tonight, Columbia College professor Joe Meno presents the new paperback edition of his story collection Demons in the Spring. Booklist says of Demons, "Intriguing and eccentric, Meno's stories never distract with their surreal flights of fancy but instead draw the reader in deeper to their magical reconfiguration of the modern world." Each of the 20 stories, including the tale of a girl who discovers she is dying from the mysterious construction of a miniature city inside of her chest cavity, features an illustration from a prominent artist. Join authors and sisters Ntozake Shange and Ifa Bayeza for an evening of spoken word and music from 6pm-9pm tonight at the DuSable Museum of African-American History, 740 E. 56th Pl. Shange, author of the acclaimed For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf (and from which the recently-released film For Colored Girls is based) and Bayeza will read excerpts from their new novel Some Sing, Some Cry, with accompaniment by some of Chicago's finest musicians. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago hosts its annual holiday art sale today from 11am to 7pm and Saturday, Nov. 20 from 10am to 5pm in the MacLean Center Ballroom, 112 S. Michigan Avenue. Peruse work by more than 120 SAIC students, for sale for $1 to more than $1,000. Admission is free.
The International Contemporary Ensemble, or ICE, present a selection of works by upcoming "Spectral School" composer Mario Diaz de León. The program, titled Prism Path, features five of the composer's works, two of them premiering here in Chicago. The performance will be held at The Velvet Lounge, 67 E.
