SAIC Holiday Art Show

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago hosts its annual holiday art sale today from 11am to 7pm and Saturday, Nov. 20 from 10am to 5pm in the MacLean Center Ballroom, 112 S. Michigan Avenue. Peruse work by more than 120 SAIC students, for sale for $1 to more than $1,000. Admission is free.

Juelejentenes Christmas Bazaar @ Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church

If you like Norwegian delights (Julekake! Spritz! Berlinerkranser!) and pea soup, get your fjols to the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church (2614 N. Kedzie) for the annual Christmas Bazaar, which runs 10am-4pm. Baked goods, a raffle, and a pea soup lunch await you. Free admission.

St. Morten's GlöggFest @ Swedish American Museum

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce hosts an evening of glögg from neighboring Simon's Tavern (the first sampling of the season's batch!), music, food and a silent auction at the Swedish American Museum, 5211 N. Clark. Admission $30; event begins at 7pm. Proceeds benefit the Chamber.

DIY Trunk Show 2010

Joe McPhee @ Corbett vs. Dempsey

Jazz saxophonist Joe McPhee performs solo at Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1120 N. Ashland Ave., tonight at 5pm, as a combination record release party and closing party for Christopher Wool's exhibition of abstract art inspired by McPhee's music. Free. More details here.

Sadie Hawkins Ride

The 2010 Sadie Hawkins Ride, a couples and pairs ride through the city, pushes off at noon today from The Blue Frog, 676 N. LaSalle St. Registration is $20 for couples. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes and other things. Proceeds benefit the The Chicago Women's Health Center.

Holiday Cooking and Cocktail Class @ Ben Pao

The holidays are just around the corner, and if you see another port wine cheese ball sitting on a buffet table, you'll scream. Head to Ben Pao's holiday cooking class, where you'll learn the secrets of dim sum and specialty cocktails, thereby ensuring your holiday party's status as the block's coolest.

Students will learn to make shrimp dumplings, satays, summer rolls, and chicken-topped rice crackers, as well as Asian pear saketinis, ginger plum martinis, and hot buttered rum drinks. Chicago Literary Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

On Saturday, Nov. 20, Chicago journalist and radio personality Rick Kogan will emcee the inaugural induction ceremony for the fledgling Chicago Literary Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will be honoring notable writers Nelson Algren, Saul Bellow, Gwendolyn Brooks, Lorraine Hansberry, Studs Terkel and Richard Wright for their contributions to local literature. Among those accepting the posthumous honors of their famous writer relatives will be Greg Bellow, Nora Brooks Blakely, Dan Terkell, Dana Smith (grandniece of Richard Wright) and Taye Hansberry (grandniece of Lorraine).

This special event takes place at Northeastern University auditorium at 3701 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. in Chicago and starts at 6pm. Tickets are $45 and can be ordered online here.

57th Annual Chicago Powwow @ Navy Pier

The American Indian Center of Chicago presents the 57th annual Chicago Powwow, this year held in the Navy Pier Grand Ballroom (600 East Grand Ave). The event will feature traditional dance and drumming contests and more than 40 authentic arts and crafts vendors and native food vendors. Doors open at 10 a.m.; dancing runs from 1-9 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6-12 and seniors (55+). Students and groups receive a $2 discount. $18 for a weekend pass. Valley of the Dolls @ Music Box

The Music Box Theatre presents a screening of the 1967 film Valley of the Dolls (the original film, not the Russ Meyer version) today at 1pm. The pre-show event, hosted by Camp Midnight host Dick O'Day, will feature a costume parade, a sing-along, and many more surprises. Taste of the Neighborhoods Tour

The City hosts a tour today of the eats representing selected neighborhoods around Chicago--Greek on Halsted, Italian on Taylor, South side BBQ, Middle Eastern in Albany Park--and you can join them! The Taste of the Neighborhoods tour series meets monthly; destinations are announced a few weeks before the tour, so contact the City to find out what's on the menu for today.
