Come to Schubas (upstairs), 3159 N. Southport, tonight at 7pm for Chicago's boldest and most bad-ass storytelling event. This brave and bold live-lit show is hosted by Samantha Irby and Keith Ecker. Tonight's featured performers include Dana Norris, Johanna Stein, Jason Economus, Deanna Moffitt and Lisa Mrock. Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 7pm. Free, 21+
Story Sessions is back at City Winery, 1200 W. Randolph St., with the theme of "Devour." Featured performers are James Sweeney, Martha Bayne, Art Jackson and Chelsea Kalberloh Jackson, Mindy Segal, Dani Bryant, and Diana Slickman, with live bluegrass before the readings. Greg Poljacik and Denise Santomauro host. Doors open at 6:30pm, show starts at 7pm. Tickets are $12.
Tonight at 7pm, Vocalo.org presents Vocalo Music & Stories: Balls of Confusion at The Chicago Urban Art Society, 600 W. Cermak Rd. Hosted by Vocalo host and producer, Luis Perez, with music by Ayana Contreras, Music & Stories combines a lineup of live lit vets with an open mic for novices, and offers a chance for all to be heard on the radio. Featured readers include Natasha Samreny and Drew Anderson, and there will be six open mic slots. Free, all-ages. Preview in Book Club.
The Moth, WBEZ and Vocalo host Chicago's seventh GrandSLAM Championship
at Park West, 322 W. Armitage Ave. The theme for this GrandSLAM is "The Showdown," and battling for the title are Renee Albrecht-Mallinger, Erica Clark, Erin Diamond, Susan Haarman, Arch Jamjun, Andi Nelson, Jim Padar, Jeffrey Qaiyum and MacKinzie Weaver. Doors open at 6pm, show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased by calling 1-800-514-ETIX, online, or at the Park West box office.
When it comes to ever evolving electronic pop music, it's hard to do better than Metronomy.The UK band will be coming to Metro, 3730 N Clark, in support of their new psych leaning album Love Letters. Cloud Control will be starting off the night with their dreamy rock sound. This is an 18+ show, tickets are $20.
The Chicago Jazz Festival and Dark Matter Coffee present The Beautiful Noise, a tribute to Sun Ra by DJ/producer King Britt, tonight at 9:30pm at Constellation, 3111 N. Western Ave. The performance serves as the launch of Jazz Fest's celebration of the Sun Ra's 100th birthday, and Dark Matter is launching its new limited edition, Sun Ra-inspired coffee blend, Astro-Black. Admission is free. 18+
