Starting at 5 p.m., Troquet River North (111 W Huron) hosts a wine-pairing dinner featuring wines from Cream Wine Company. Guests are served two small plates paired with a flight of four wines for $25. The menu includes mussel beignets paired with Vinho Verde and Pinot Noir and a mini Angus burger paired with Chardonnay and a Bordeaux blend. From 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. Erin Drain from Cream Wine Company will be available to talk about the featured wines and Troquet's wine draft system, which keeps wine temperatures consistent and the wine fresh.
What happens when you begin as an observer and then transition into a participant when viewing artwork in a museum? The Smart Museum in Hyde Park is seeking out the answer to this question in their event this afternoon/evening titled, "500 Clown at the Threshold." Starting at 5pm, the event will feature live performances and conversations inspired by the sculptures that are on view currently from the show, Carved, Cast, Crumpled: Sculpture All Ways. The Smart Museum is located at 5550 S. Greenwood Ave. and is free to the public.
The SAIC Visiting Artists Program offers creatives around the city a chance to participate and listen to lectures by artists and historians around the globe. This evening in the Rubloff Auditorium, 230 S. Columbus Dr., Claire Bishop and Claire Doherty will be having a dialogue starting from 6pm to 7:30pm. Free. Homeroom hosts a Songwriter Showcase tonight at 7pm at HAUS in Columbia College's the Quincy Wong Center, 623 S. Wabash Ave. This month features JC Brooks, Odea, Isaiah Oby and Kate Adams; they'll discuss their work and process and then perform a song or two solo.
Story Club North Side returns to the Holiday Club, 4000 N. Sheridan Rd., tonight at 7:30pm with the theme "cold comfort." Featured readers include Jeremy Owens, Parker Stockman and Elizabeth Gomez, and there will be a couple open mic slots available if you have a story to share. Dana Norris hosts. $10 suggested donation. 21+
The Via Festival runs Oct. 1-4 in various locations in Chicago, most of them secret. Tonight's show is one of those secret shows; ticket holders will learn the locale day-of. It features Blue Hawaii, DOSS, Different Sleep and Teen Witch Fan Club; works by visual artists will also be on display. Doors are at 8pm. Tickets are $15. In addition, there's a show at Primary, 5 W. Division St., at 10pm, featuring Distal, Groundislava and Them Flavors DJs. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door. You can also get a get a festival pass for $55. Both shows are 21+
