Ta-Nehisi Coates @ Roosevelt University

Ta-Nehisi Coates, a senior editor and writer for The Atlantic and journalist-in-residence at City University of New York, earlier this year wrote the controversial story "The Case for Reparations," which examined the cultural and economic issues surrounding violence in Chicago's majority-black neighborhoods. He'll discuss the article and the issue as a whole at 5pm tonight in Roosevelt University's 10th floor library, 430 S. Michigan Ave. Admission is free.

Michael Chabon @ Harold Washington Library

At 6pm tonight, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Chabon helps launch the One Book, One Chicago program with a conversation about his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, this year's selection. Angel Ysaguirre, executive director of the Illinois Humanities Council, sits down with him in the Pritzker Auditorium at the Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State St. Admission is free and large crowd is expected, so get there early.

Steven Pinker @ Loyola Crown Hall

Steven Pinker, New York Times best-selling author, two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist and the Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, will read from and discuss his new book, The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century, at Loyola University's Crown Center for the Humanities, 1001 W. Loyola Ave., from 7pm to 9:30pm. The book applies insights from the sciences of language and mind to the challenge of crafting clear, coherent and stylish prose.

Too Much Light @ Pritzker Pavilion

The Neo-Futurists bring their hit show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind to the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, 205 E. Randolph St., tonight at 7pm in honor of its 25th anniversary. As always, it's 30 plays in 60 minutes, but this time it's free.

Garden Gala at Garfield Park Conservatory

The Midwest Pesticide Action Center presents the Garden Gala at Garfield Park Conservatory, 300 N. Central Park Ave., tonight at 7pm. The event will feature vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and meat options for dinner, fresh juices from Pint in Season, cocktails, music and a silent auction. Tickets are $75, or $100 for VIP entry at 6pm that includes a private tour of the conservatory.
