The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., presents a screening of the new documentary Harmontown along with a special appearance by the film's subject, "Community" creator and podcaster Dan Harmon. Two screenings are happening today, one at 2:30pm and one at 7pm. Tickets are going fast, so head on over to the Music Box website to buy advance tickets.
The National Museum of Mexican Art, 1852 W. 19th St., hosts a family-friendly Day of the Dead celebration today from 3 to 5pm. Make Cempasuchil flowers, papel picado and other crafts; get your face painted dia de los muertos style; take a photobooth portrait; enter a drawing for a sugar skull; and enjoy light refreshments and pan de muerto. Free.
Shake off your Halloween hangover at tonight's 6th Annual Half Acre Charitable Chili Cook Off at the Arts of Life's studio (2010 W Carroll Ave). From 5-8pm, you'll sample chili (meat and vegetarian) from cooks (the theme is "Day of the Dead," fittingly), beer from Half-Acre (of course), gelato from Black Dog, and entertainment from CHIRP Radio and The Arts of Life Band. Tickets $15-25.
Silvie's Lounge hosts the Halloween / Day of the Dead edition of Chicago Ukulele Cabaret. Musicians are invited to play a 15-minute set that must include an 'ukulele, and must be on the theme of the evening. Show starts at 8:00pm, and continues until there are no other performers. The Freakeasy hosts Dead Celebrities, a Day of the Dead spectacular, at the Metro, 3730 N. Clark St., from 9pm to 5am. The show features performances on three stages (including on outside) by Slang, DJ Heather, DJ Icey, Environmental Encroachment, Gene Hunt, Keith Mackenzie, Chicago Fire Tribe, Tom Hill and Shorty Belle, and many more.
