Dubbed the "the country's largest celebration of wood and barrel aged beer," the UIC Forum (725 W. Roosevelt) turns into a large bar tonight at the Illinois Craft Brewers' Guild's Festival of Barrel Aged Beers. Sample the suds of 90+ brewers (300+ varieties!); your $55 admission includes 15 tastings. Runs 6-10pm tonight; tomorrow 1-5pm and 6-10pm.
On the second Friday of every month, the 30-or-so galleries and creative spaces in the Chicago Arts District at Halsted and 18th streets open their doors to showcase art and artists from Chicago and the world. The opening receptions begin at 6pm and last officially until 10pm, letting viewers get up close with the art and artists for free. Maps are available at the information center at 1821 S. Halsted St.
Tonight at 6pm, NYCH Gallery, 643 W. 18th St., will feature 10 artists who express personal emotions, social relevance and craft in their work. The artists exhibited are: Abraham Brand, Cesar Conde, Jaime Foster, Michael William Foster, Nasim Hantehzadeh, Lexygius Calip, Phillip Scott, Chantala Kommanivanh, Christie Chew-Wallace, Shana Zentner. The Art Institute hosts a screening of Medium Cool, a 1969 film by Haskell Wexler shot during the 1968 Democratic Convention, tonight at 6:30pm in Fullerton Hall. Free; enter at the 111 S. Michigan Ave. entrance.
You're Being Ridiculous, the sassy, funny and fun storytelling show created by Jeremy Owens, is back tonight in Andersonville. With three shows this month, there's sure to be a date that matches your calendar. Come out tonight to hear stories on the theme "Confession" from Lily Be, Sarah Hollenbeck, Brenna Kearney, Andrew Marikis, Dana Norris, Jeremy Owens, Megan Stielstra, and James Sweeny. Stories start at 8:00pm at Mary's Attic, 5400 N. Clark St. Tickets are $15 online or at the door.
Brill Bruisers is yet another solid power-pop outing for the New Pornographers. The paths the band tried to forge with their last two albums have mostly been put aside to get back to the formula that made their first three albums such a success. But no matter where their music has gone, their shows have remained ultra fun. The New Pornographers headline the Riviera, 4746 N. Racine Ave. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart will open. The show's $30, 18+ and starts at 8pm.
