The Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St., presents a screening of Joe Dante's 1993 film Matinee as part of its series The Unquiet American: Transgressive Comedies from the U.S. Tonight's screening is at 6pm, and includes a lecture on the film by former Reader film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum. Write Club @ Hideout

The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave., hosts the monthly gathering known as Write Club. Host Ian Belknap oversees a series of three literary bouts, in which Chicago actors and authors take up opposing views to win bragging rights (and donations for their favorite charities). Admission is $10 at the door; show starts at 7pm. 21+

Seven Minutes in Purgatory @ Music Box

Ian Abramson hosts Seven Minutes in Purgatory, a show in which seven comedians -- Danny Kallas, Mike Lebovitz, Rebecca O’Neal, Candy Lawrence, Jeff Steinbrunner, Trey Brown and John Eisenrich -- perform their material to a camera alone in a soundproof room, while the audience watches and laughs elsewhere. The show is at the Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., tonight at 7pm. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

Story Club South Side @ Co-Prosperity Sphere

Story Club's South Side chapter returns to the Co-Prosperity Sphere, 3219 S. Morgan St., tonight at 7:30pm for an evening of stories themed on "My Other Talent." For one night only, Story Club South Side will have non-story activity on its stage, alongside the story. Featured readers are writer/Beastie Boys cover rapper Kendra Stevens, playwright and cellist Laura Nessler with storyteller Kim Morris, ordained minister and queer activist Aidan McCormack, and essayist and actor Josh Zagoran with Chad the Bird. There will also be a couple of open mic slots. Andrew Marikis hosts. $10 suggested donation at the door, BYOB.
