The Illinois State Cyclocross Championships, the culmination of the Chicago Cross Cup season, runs today in Montrose Harbor. Watch one of the most exciting forms of bike racing as cyclists navigate a variety of terrains on and off their bikes. Races begin at 8:30am and continue till 5pm. Free.
The 14th annual One of a Kind Show fills the Merchandise Mart, 222 W. Merchandise Mart Plaza, with more than 600 artists, jewelers, crafters, furniture makers, indie clothiers, chefs and more. The show runs Dec. 4-7, and is open from 10am to 5pm today. Admission is $12; get two-for-one tickets online with the code 2TIX.
The Renegade Craft Fair & Holiday Art Sale continues today at the Bridgeport Art Center, 1200 W. 35th St. Hours are 11am to 6pm. You can preview this year's lineup of 200+ artists and artisans. The fair also features free workshops plus music, coffee, hot chocolate bar, food and sweets, and beer and wine. BAC's artists and designers open their studios to visitors. Admission is free. Martyrs', 3855 N. Lincoln Ave., hosts its second annual Krampus Fest holiday market from 11am to 4pm today. Shop for handmade and homemade gifts from local artisans, crafters, bakers and makers. Admission is free.
The Chicago Printmakers Collaborative hosts its 25th annual International Small Print Show and Holiday Sale Dec. 5-7. See and purchase prints by over 60 artists. The show is open from 11am to 7pm today.
The Bitter Betty's Holiday Bazaar runs from noon to 6pm today at the Innertown Pub, 1935 W. Thomas Ave. Shop for locally made crafts, fashion, art, prepared foods and more. There will also be a bloody mary bar and spiked hot chocolate on special, and a free raffle featuring prizes donated by neighborhood businesses. Admission is free.
The Renaissance Society, located at 5811 S. Ellis Ave., Bergman Gallery, Cobb Hall 418 on the University of Chicago's campus, will be presenting the work of Mathias Poledna, an LA based artist. The reception will begin at 4pm with a screening of a 35mm film. Solveig Øvstebø, the director of the Renaissance Society, will lead a discussion with Andrew Weiner at 5pm in Kent Hall, Room 120. Talk and opening reception are free and open to the public.
Fat Rice (2957 W. Diversey Ave.) holds a pop-up market of housemade holiday treats and eats (among them wine, jams, sauces and nuts) today at their store tonight from 5-9pm, with some holiday punch or dumplings to enjoy.
Comedian Demetri Martin does two shows tonight at the Athenaeum, 2936 N. Southport Ave., at 7pm and 10pm. Tickets are $37.50.
Daviel Shy's The Ladies Almanack is still a work in progress, but throughout the coming year, The Nightingale's Follow Focus program will present excerpts in four installments while giving viewers a peek behind the scenes. The first screening takes place tonight at 7pm, at 1084 N. Milwaukee and will include a presentation from Shy and dramatic readings from the novel. For the $15 ticket price, you'll even get a souvenir: part of a Ladies Almanack tarot deck designed by Jess LeMaster, also to be released gradually over the course of the series.
Nick Lowe fronts Los Straightjackets for his Quality Holiday Revue at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., Saturday and tonight. Doors open at 8pm; tickets are $40.
