Story Week Festival of Writers

Columbia College's Story Week Festival of Writers runs March 15-21 at various locations throughout the city. See the schedule for details. All events are free and open to the public.

Fighting Violence: The Power of Words @ Harold Washington Library Center

Audrey Petty, editor of High Rise Stories; Kevin Coval of Louder than a Bomb and Mitchell S. Jackson, author of The Residue Years will do a reading and be in discussion with Miles Harvey, editor of How Long Will I Cry. The event is part of Columbia College Chicago's Story Week and will be held in the Pritzker Pavilion, Lower Level, Harold Washington Library Center, 400 S. State Street at 2 p.m.. The event is free and open to the public.

Soup & Bread @ the Hideout

Soup & Bread, the weekly wintertime soup-eating party benefiting a local food-related charity, is tonight at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia Ave. Volunteer cooks make the soup; you show up between 5:30 and 8pm to eat, enjoy and kick in a few bucks for the cause. Kids welcome with parents.

Vara Caivano Gallery Walk Through @ The Renaissance Society

Join the Renaissance Society in this evenings gallery walk-through of Vara Caivano's The Density of the Actions exhibition. The walk begins at 6PM at 5811 S. Ellis Ave. Free and open to the public.

The Moth GrandSLAM Championship @ Park West

The Moth showcases some of the best storytellers at the Chicago GrandSLAM tonight at the Park West, 322 W. Armitage Ave. Doors open at 6pm, show's at 8pm. Tickets are $25. 18+

Palabra Pura: A Toda Madre @ La Bruquena

The Guild Literary Complex continues its 10th season of Palabra Pura monthly bilingual reading series with a poetry reading tonight at La Bruquena Restaurant, 2726 W. Division St., at 7:30pm. The program, organized by the Chicago Latino Writers Initiative, is called "A Toda Madre: Men Pay Tribute to Their Mothers," and includes readings from Arturo "Tootie" Alvarez and Brian Martin. Pay what you can; $5 suggested donation.
