The 37th annual Chicago Jazz Festival runs Sept. 3-6 in Millennium Park, 201 E. Randolph St., and Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St. The festival begins at 12:15pm today; see the schedule for details. Free.
The Chicago Fringe Festival runs Sept. 3-13 in five venues throughout the Jefferson Park neighborhood. Pick up a festival button (required for all shows) for $5 online or at Fischman's Liquors, 4780 N. Milwaukee Ave., then take your pick of the many performances of experimental theater, performance art, sketch comedy, dance and more -- see the schedule for daily details. Tickets to performances are $10, with multi-show tickets available. Tonight is the festival opening night party at Fischman's at 6pm.
Located at the Art Institute of Chicago in the Rubloff Auditorium, Chris Ware will be in discussion with Hamza Walker from 6-8pm. Ware is an award winning cartoonist and author. The auditorium is located at 230 S. Columbus Dr.
The festival's first of three nights will host 12 acts at the CiC Theater, 1422 W. Irving Park Rd., including one of iO Chicago's best Harold teams, The Late '90s, and the popular independent improv group Sand. First show is at 7pm; see the schedule for full details. Tickets are $25.
Female comedy review the kates are at Laugh Factory, 3175 N. Broadway, tonight at 8pm. This month the lineup includes Kelsie Huff, Amy Sumpter, Amy Shanker, Erica Watson, Courtney Buckwalter, Kimberly Marion and Sam Gordan. Tickets are $17 in advance, $20 at the door. Two drink minimum. 18+
The Logan Theatre, 2646 N. Milwaukee Ave., and Pipeworks Brewing present a release party for Pipeworks' white Russian milk stout, "Hey, Careful Man, There's a Beverage Here," followed by a screening of The Big Lebowski The fun starts tonight at 9pm with a tapping and tasting in the lounge at the Logan, and will include a costume contest. The movie screens at 10:30pm and 11pm; tickets are $5. The party is free and 21+.
