Culinary Fight Club @ Marriott Medical District

Culinary Fight Club brings its live cooking competition to the Chicago Marriott at Medical District/UIC, 625 S. Ashland Ave., tonight from 6 to 9pm. The theme this round is "gourmet grilled cheese," and the contestants will have an hour to come up with the best bite they can. Tickets are $40, and include samples of the contestants' creations and two hours of open bar for Sam Adams beer and wine. A portion of the proceeds benefit Fight2Feed. 21+

Chicago International Film Festival Opening Night

The 51st Chicago International Film Festival celebrates Opening Night at the Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress Pkwy., tonight at 6:30pm with a premiere presentation of Mia Madre (My Mother). Star John Turturro will be in attendance as guest of honor. Tickets are $23. The film Festival runs Oct. 15-29; see the site for full schedule.

Kickstarter Film Festival @ Music Box

The Music Box Theatre, 3733 N. Southport Ave., hosts the 2015 Kickstarter Film Festival, featuring short and feature films that were funded through Kickstarter. Two programs screen tonight, one at 7pm (featuring the 2014 comedy What We Do In The Shadows) and one at 9:20pm (featuring animator Don Hertzfeldt's latest film World of Tomorrow). While they are both free, there are so many RSVPs that they're officially listed as sold out. If you want, brave the line and hope to get in.

Eileen Pollack @ Women & Children First

Author Eileen Pollack reads and discusses her new book, The Only Woman in the Room, at Women & Children First Bookstore (5233 N. Clark) tonight at 7:30pm. The book brings to light the struggles that women in the sciences are often hesitant to admit and provides hope that changing attitudes and behaviors can bring more women into fields in which they remain significantly underrepresented. Admission is Free.
