Jim Boylan, We Hardly Knew Ya... Thank God
After compiling a 24-32 record in his little-more-than-three-months tenure as interim head coach of the Bulls, Jim Boylan was fired by the team today.
Yeah, I know, me too. I’ll miss him. Now, what was his name again?
Boylan, who took over from Scott Skiles on Dec. 27, left a legacy that consists primarily of player apathy, lateness, temper tantrums and a general disregard for whatever authority he tried to muster. The Sun-Times’ Bulls beat reporter John Jackson likened the situation to "anarchy."
According to news reports, Boylan left the Berto Center in a rush after meeting with GM John Paxson, without making a comment to reporters, which seems to indicate that he was surprised and upset by the decision to let him go, which further seems to indicate that he’s nuts.
Joakim Noah verbally battling with an assistant coach? Letting Ben Wallace and Adrian Griffin determine Noah’s punishment? Tyrus Thomas skipping practice over a lack of playing time? Chris Duhon missing practice because he was at a Duke game a day before? Andres Nocioni kicked off the bench for lashing out at Boylan during a game?
Yeah, I can see where he would be surprised at being fired… ahem.
Anyway, the Bulls begin yet another coaching search, and don’t be surprised if the top names in the game that are available don’t step forward. Being head coach of the Bulls has become one of the tougher gigs in the NBA. But I hear Tim Floyd is available.
What, too soon?
