Banking on the Windy City Rollers
When many people think roller derby, they remember derby as it was played in the 1970s: fake fights, banked tracks, and a certain amount of sleaze. Those days are gone with the 2000s edition of derby, including banked tracks. Most derby leagues, the Windy City Rollers and Chicago Outfit included, skate on flat tracks--simply put, they're easier and cheaper to construct and maintain.
But some leagues still roll on banked tracks, including the legendary LA Derby Dolls, who will be taking on the Windy City Rollers in the Red Bull Banked Jam on Saturday, Dec. 11 at the UIC Pavilion (525 South Racine Ave). This should be an interesting bout--WCR isn't used to skating on anything but a flat track, and trust me, it will make a difference.
If girls flying every which way over the sides of the track isn't enough, punk-ska band Less Than Jake will be performing as well. Doors are at 7 p.m., the bout starts at 8. Get your tickets online or at the door.
