WCR All-Stars Win Golden Bowl

wcr-logo.png The Windy City Rollers All-Stars beat the Denver Roller Dolls Mile High Club 138-132 Saturday to win the Golden Bowl III tournament.

Saturday's victory meant the All-Stars finished the tournament 3-0, while the other three teams - the Mile High Club, the Texas Rollergirls Texecutioners and the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls Golden Girls - finished with records of 1-2. Based on point differential, Denver finished second, Texas third and B.ay A.rea fourth.

The All-Stars led 100-56 at the half, though the bout was not nearly as one-sided as the score might suggest.

Denver started the second half strong, chipping away at the lead until the score was 138-128 in favor of the All-Stars with 48 seconds left to play. Sami "Slamsonite" Lester took lead jammer for Denver in the final jam. The All-Stars' Yvette YourMaker quickly went to the penalty box, giving Denver a power jam.

But the power jam didn't last long, as Lester soon went to the box, releasing Yvette YourMaker. The All-Stars managed to hold Lester to only four points after she was released from the penalty box, securing the win and the tournament title.

"It was fun to play - fun and nerve-wracking," All-Stars captain Bork Bork Bork said after the bout. "This was a big step forward for us as a team."

Though the All-Stars came out on top, Bork Bork Bork said the team could have done more to take advantage of the times when Denver's jammers were in the penalty box.

"Power jams, when giving to you, are a gift," she said.

Bork Bork Bork praised the All-Stars' efforts to stay out of the penalty box Saturday and said the score could have been different had Denver had fewer penalties or the All-Stars had more.

"Denver had a ton of penalties," she said. "Typically it's Windy (City Rollers) in that position. You never know. This game can change so quickly."

In other action Saturday, Texas beat Denver 227-189 to secure third place. The Rollers' c-team, the Third Coast, beat the St. Louis-based Arch Rival Roller Girls Fleur De Linquents 274-113.
