Contest: My Morning Jacket @ Charter One!

mmj.jpg It's been almost two years since Louisville's My Morning Jacket last graced Chicago with a visit. They haven't released new recordings since that year's Evil Urges, but two years is a long time away for what was once a monster of a touring band. The rumor mill is buzzing with word that they're working on a new album that could be released in the first half of 2011, but for now they're just playing some summer shows filled with the hits. And, oh, do they have hits in their live arsenal. (See: "One Big Holiday" from "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" a while back - still one of the greatest musical performances ever on a talk show.)

Over the course of their career, they have pushed genre boundaries from a reverb-obsessed southern/psychedelic rock hybrid to a spacier Neil Young or Buffalo Springfield to a culmination mixed at times with a little funk, as if those Prince covers they've loved to do finally influenced their originals. But where My Morning Jacket has always been best is on a stage. They may look somewhere between Metallica and the Band, but it's all cohesive when they rock out for epic sets. This tour finds them fine-tuning some of the back catalog and absolutely stunning the large crowds that've finally jumped on the bandwagon. (And to think just ten years ago they were playing in front of sparse audiences at Phyllis' and the Fireside Bowl.)

My Morning Jacket plays Charter One Pavilion at Northerly Island on Tuesday, August 17. Califone opens at 7PM. Tickets are $46. The show benefits Mercy Home. Thanks to some friends of Transmission, we're giving away a pair of tickets to this show. Write to contests@gapersblock.com with "MAHGEETAH" in the subject line for a chance to win. [Update! We have our winner! Congrats to Anna!]
