Mike Reed Holds The Umbrella Over Chicago

reed small.jpgThe Tribune's Howard Reich has written a great profile of Chicago Jazz drummer extraordinaire Mike Reed. Reed is well known in the avant-garde world with his bands People, Places & Things and Loose Assembly, for organizing the now standard Sunday night jazz series at Hungry Brain, and as one of the curators behind the annual Umbrella Music Festival (which is in full swing now and continues at various venues through the weekend--see schedule after the jump). But what's only common knowledge within a few circles is that Reed is also the man behind Pitchfork Music Festival and the Downtown Sound Series taking place at Millennium Park every summer.

It's not only that Reed is involved in all these projects; he was there for their inception, and often times the driving force. Reich describes Reed as a musical "community organizer" and states that he "has emerged as a center of gravity for music in Chicago (and beyond)." Oh, he's also the vice chairman of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. It's impossible not to wonder how he does it all, but one thing is for sure: when it comes to the future Reed has no plans of slowing down, and Chicago is lucky to have him in the driver's seat.

There are a couple of upcoming opportunities to see Mike Reed in action: first playing in the Umbrella Music Festival this Saturday at Hideout (details after the jump), and on November 20th when Loose Assembly plays a special CD release concert inside the confines of the Pritzker Pavilion (don't worry, the glass doors will be closed with the audience seated on the stage) from 4-5pm. Admission for the Pritzker show is Free.
