Preview: Holdfast @ Beat Kitchen, 6/12
Up and coming Chicago pop-rock darlings Holdfast are playing the this Saturday, June 12 in continued support of their EP Like The Sun which dropped earlier this year.
The unmistakable screeching of an El train that Like The Sun opens with is about the only sound on this short, but oh-so-sweet disc that is Chicago-born. This EP plays more like something that would hail from the West Coast, a smooth-rocking surfer's nightcap. With twinkling guitar lines, warbling vocals and folky breakdowns, every song off Like The Sun could be the soundtrack to the picturesque scene that's splashed across the EP's cover.
Really, Like The Sun's opener "Mars/Why Can't I Feel Tonight" is much like an overture of the proceeding four tracks. Holdfast aren't afraid to show off their vulnerability on this release as heard in the "Mars" portion of the track, an acoustic tale filled with timeless elements like liquor and rooftops. However, just when they've lulled you into a reverie-like melody, the song seamlessly turns into an upbeat jaunt proving that Holdfast can be simultaneously sensitive and playful without missing a beat.
Holdfast share the stage with Warm Ones and Sam Vicari this Sunday at the Beat Kitchen (2100 W. Belmont). The show is 17+ and tickets are $8.
