Lollapalooza Artist Preview: Christina Perri
Christina Perri's sudden rise to fame is the stuff dreams are made of, lifted straight out of a perfect ending storyline. Her breakout (and heartbreaking) hit "Jar of Hearts" garnered instant fame after being featured on Fox television show So You Think You Can Dance, selling over 100,000 copies within the month. The song clearly struck a nerve with audience viewers, and it's clear to see why when you realize that Perri's words are something that we've all felt when it comes to love and life.
Perri's story is simple to start with; she moved to California at the age of 21, married her boyfriend within year, and 18 months later was divorced and back home in Philadelphia. During this period of her divorce and moving home, Perri wrote "Jar of Hearts," an honest confrontation towards someone that she trusted and loved, who clearly hurt her deeply. The song also showed the strength one can gain when hurt, as she promises in the song not to let this lost love from before back in her life again. Sure, there are details that make her story specific, but many of us have been in a similar situation. And pain from love is a universal feeling.
I myself really was drawn to the track the first time I heard it because of my own experience. The honesty that Perri displays, telling someone just how wrong they were and just how deeply they hurt her, cut to the core. And to hear the power in her voice, exclaiming that "you don't get to get me back" gave a voice to so many that have never had the chance or courage to stand up to someone they both loved and hated. It really is a perfect example of a quintessential pop song, something a listener can really relate to.
It will be interesting and exciting to see Perri perform at Lollapalooza, since she is still such a young talent that is early on in her career. Lollapalooza has a knack for finding up-and-coming acts before they reach the height of their career (Lady Gaga on a side stage years ago comes to mind), and it's an exciting place to see an artist still fresh and finding their footing as a performer.
