D. Wade's Chicago Has Talent
Dwyane Wade knows talent — and he wants everyone to know that his hometown, Chicago, has plenty of it. This past weekend at the Chicago Theater, the NBA superstar held "D. Wade's Chicago Has Talent," a youth-inspired showcase held in conjunction with his fourth annual Wade's World Weekend.
Hosted by Chicago comedian Lil Rel and television personality Rocsi ("106 and Park"), with celebrity judges including "Windy City Live's" Ryan Chiaverini, Chicago's own funnyman Damon Williams and singer/actress Drew Sidora, the event featured a twelve-contestant competition with acts from the world of music, dance and spoken word.
Along with the hundreds of screaming kids that filled the theater, Wade himself was excited about the competition. "Every year I leave, I can't wait to do it again," he said. But the competition was more than about just performing; for Wade, it was a chance to give back. "The Wade's World Foundation does many events; but to me, the most important events we do are the ones that give kids an opportunity." For host Lil Rel, emphasizing youth and the arts was equally important. "I'm happy [Dwyane Wade] asked me to do it. I'm big on the arts and our young people showing their talent," he said.
The line-up featured diverse, multi-cultural acts with youth ranging from ages 7-18, from both the city and suburbs. Among the acts were the cheerleading and dance troupe, Chi-Town Sassy Ladies, Curie High School's Musicality Vocal Ensemble, rapper Shortie-Mac, and live band, The Unknown. Other highlights included performances by talented teen band, Kids These Days and teen sensation Jawan Harris, who was a crowd favorite.
Of the talented acts in the competition, first place honors went to Chi-Town's Finest Breakers, a break-dance crew who wowed the audience with a variety of acrobatic moves and stunts. The crew walked away with a $3,000 cash prize and will make an appearance on ABC's "Windy City Live."
