Preview: Beats Antique @ Park West 10/31
Though Halloween is on a Wednesday, you shouldn't let that stop you from getting your freak on. It only comes but once a year so you might as well do it right. There are several shows occurring throughout the city, but Beats Antique at Park West, 322 W. Armitage Ave., will surely make for a bewitching evening.
Two supporting acts are set to open the show before Beats Antique. Both bring slightly different genres to the table, which should coincide with the featured band's hybrid sound very nicely. Local jamtronica band The Coop will start the night off with their funky tunes. Singer-songwriter, producer and beat-boxer Lynx will further the musical diversification with her genre-bending sounds.
Beats Antique is a three-piece experimental band that radiates both aural and visual aesthetics. The trio mixes electronic beats with world fusion music to create a genre that its truly all their own. The members of Beats Antique are multitalented artists. Drummer Tommy "Sidecar" Cappel is also responsible for pre-making the beats and producing the music. David Satori is a virtuoso of stringed instruments and adds the world music element to their sound. Zoe Jakes is the bona fide eye-candy of the band's performance. She is a cutting-edge belly dancer who combines Indian classical dance with modern styles. When she is not dancing or changing into an intricate costume, she grabs a bass drum that is almost bigger than she is and dramatically pounds on it.
Beats Antique is notorious for putting on quite the spectacle during their routine shows. So they are likely to bring some new costumes and props to the stage on such a creative holiday as Halloween. Needless to say it will not be a boring show.
Tickets are $25. The event is 18 and over. The doors open at 8pm and the show is scheduled to begin at 9pm.
The show at Park West will be Beats Antique's last in the U.S. until the very end of the year. In November they will spend two weeks touring Australia. On Nov. 21 the band will headline The Great Convergence in Giza, Egypt.
