Preview: Bellfuries with Jessica Lee Wilkes 10/2 @ Schubas
The Bellfuries sound like they're resurrecting music from before the day it died. They got an upright bass, a semi-hollow guitar, and a big yelping vocalist to prove it. And it seems they're only a duckwalk or a hip shake away from the '50s.
Coming from their hometown of Austin, TX, they are touring to support their recently released third album Workingman's Bellfuries. They kick it off with a classic rockabilly beat on "Loving Arms," and a few numbers throughout the record take the form of the 12-bar blues, and a George Harrison like volume-pedal creates a wonderfully contemplative effect on "Just Remembering" for their wistful ballad.
Like so many of the classic groups from the early days of rock 'n' roll, they play with conviction. The rock 'n' roll band doesn't really sound new, but they also don't need to. Among the swinging tunes is the upbeat "She's A Woman." Fans of the raw ingredients that made first rock music -- country, r&b, rockabilly, and the improvisational nature of jazz -- will be delighted.
Sure, it's old-sounding music, but they deliver it fresh, with tremendous energy, and without a hint of irony or pretension. See them perform at Schubas this Friday, Oct. 2 with the opener Jessica Lee Wilkes from Kentucky. The show starts at 9pm and costs $12. This is pre-British Invasion, people, let's get rid of our mop-tops and come party like it's 1959.
