Schubas, 3159 N. Southport Ave., hosts a gear swap this afternoon for musicians who want to clear out their music gear. Local vendors will be around to buy and sell used & vintage gear. The gear swap runs today from 11am to 3pm, and admission is free.
The 21st annual SOFA Chicago, the expo of sculptural objects and functional art and design, runs Nov. 7-9 in Festival Hall on Navy Pier. More than 70 galleries from around the world exhibit the works of hundreds of artists. There are also lectures given by artists and gallery owners throughout Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $20, or get a three-day pass for $30; children under 12 admitted free with an adult. The festival is open from 11am to 7pm today. Read our preview in A/C.
Handmade Market is back at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave., this afternoon from noon to 4pm. Come view plenty of local crafters selling their handmade wares! Admission is free. 21+, with the exception of kids accompanied by a parent.
The First Nations Film & Video Festival runs Nov. 5-8 at various locations throughout the city. The festival concludes today with showings at 3 and 5pm at the Meztli Cultural Organization at the Citlalin Gallery, 2005 S. Blue Island Ave. Each screening will feature the documentary Indian 101 and a selection of shorts. Admission is free.
Opening tonight, "Graft", a new exhibition will be featured at the Comfort Station located on 2579 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Logan Square. The reception is from 4pm-8pm and is free and open to the public. The show features the work of Noelle Allen, alongside several other artists that inspire or are influential to Allen's practice.
The conceptual art gallery, LVL3 is featuring the work of Robert Chase Heishman and Adam Parker Smith in the exhibit titled, "Indefinite Free Time" tonight from 6pm-10pm. The exhibition touches leisure, everyday routines and the passing of time. LVL3 is located in Wicker Park at 1542 N Milwaukee Ave; free and open to the public.
Land & Sea Dept partners with chefs from Milwaukee's Vanguard for a six-course meal of Sconnie delights (New Glarus Beer! Old Fashioneds! Duck! Squab!) tonight at Land & Sea Dept, 3124 W. Carroll, beginning at 6:30pm. Tickets $75.
Stephin Merritt of Magnetic Fields does a solo show tonight at the Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., with special guest Advance Base opening. Preview in Transmission. Doors are at 7pm, and tickets are $30.
Join the party with dance company Perceptual Motion's Win and Chocolate Benefit tonight from 7 to 10pm, at the St. Andrew's Greek Orthodox Church, 5649 N. Sheridan Rd. Sample chocolate and wine, watch dance performances and demonstrations, and bid in a silent auction. Doors open at 6:45pm. Tickets are $45 in advance and $60 at the door. Individuals who purchase their tickets in advance will also receive a pass for two people to the ONE-Of-A-KIND Show at the Merchandise Mart in December.
The Portage Theater, 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave., welcomes The Tiger Lillies, the "avant garde cabaret band" who notably wrote the music for the macabre stage hit Shockheaded Peter. The band will be playing two shows, Friday and tonight at 8pm. Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Full details at the theater's website.
