The 21st annual SOFA Chicago, the expo of sculptural objects and functional art and design, runs Nov. 7-9 in Festival Hall on Navy Pier. More than 70 galleries from around the world exhibit the works of hundreds of artists. There are also lectures given by artists and gallery owners throughout Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $20, or get a three-day pass for $30; children under 12 admitted free with an adult. The festival is open from noon to 6pm today. Read our preview in A/C.
The Empty Bottle and Curbside Splendor Publishing present an afternoon book fair, starting at 1pm in the friendly confines of the Empty Bottle, 1035 N. Western Ave. Over 30 independent publishers and booksellers will be here selling all kinds of books, from small to large! Admission is $8, or free is you RSVP through Ticketweb. Hannah Givler presents her work at the 4th Ward Project Space, 5338 S. Kimbark Ave. in Hyde Park. The exhibition, Affects Illustrated, explores architecture and site specific installation. The event will begin at 3pm today. Free.
Outhouse Gallery, a visual art exhibition space located in the West Loop will be exhibiting a one night event for the artist Mel Phongsavath. Outhouse will be transformed into a south eastern Asian domestic dining space through installation work and the participation of the public. Outhouse Gallery is located at 212 N. The incredible chef and author Dorie Greenspan will discuss her new book Baking Chez Moi with Middlewest's David Tamarkin tonight at Floriole, 1220 W. Webster St. from 7 to 9pm; your $25 admission gets you drinks, conversation, and delicious recipes made from the book itself (which will be available for purchase/inscribing).
The Phantom Collective will present a staged reading of "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Samuel Coleridge at 7:30pm tonight at the Haymarket Pub. The reading will be preceded by an original theater piece, "Ripple," about being lost at sea. Tickets are $15 cash or check; pay at the door. For venue information, see the website.
November is National Runaway Prevention Month, and That's All She Wrote is donating all proceeds from this month's show to the National Runaway Safeline and focusing this month's stories on the theme of "home." Readers include NRS representative Becca Bowlin, Erica Dreisbach, John Leo, and Angela Vela. Hosted as always by JH Palmer and Angela Benander at Great Lakes Tattoo, 1148 W. Grand Ave. BYOB.
