Oscar Nominations Discussion @ Siskel Film Center

Today from 4:30 to 5:30pm at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. State St., Illinois Film Office Deputy Director Betsy Steinberg moderates a panel discussion about this year's Academy Award nominees with Chicago film critics J.R. Jones (Reader), Michael Phillips (Tribune), Steve Prokopy (Gapers Block and Ain't It Cool News), Tasha Robinson (The Dissolve) and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky (MUBI and The A.V. Club). The panel will be followed by a reception featuring wine by City Winery. Admission is free.

The Dark Crystal @ Art Institute

The Art Institute, 111 S. Michigan Ave., screens the Jim Henson classic The Dark Crystal tonight at 6pm in Fullerton Hall, in connection with the current exhibition Puppets!. Free with museum admission. Details here. Free.

Kishi Bashi @ The Athenaeum

Kaoru Ishibashi has been on the scene for years, playing for Of Montreal and Regina Spektor, before he found his solo niche dazzling audiences with his violin loops and imaginative sounds as Kishi Bashi. Ishibashi headlines the Athenaeum Theatre, 2936 N. Southport, tonight for the second day of the TNK fest. In Tall Buildings opens. Show starts at 7:00pm, tickets are $23.

Stars Align @ GMan Tavern

Join Gapers Block at GMan Tavern, 3740 N. Clark St., for Stars Align, our monthly music series showcasing collaborations between two artists! This month we've got Brad Sawicki of Ancient Friends and Bryan Kveton of Sunjacket teaming up to play each other's songs, some covers and who knows what else. Doors open at 7:30, show's at 8pm. It's free, and the show is sponsored by Begyle Brewing, who'll have at least one of their beers fresh on tap. See you there! 21+

Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival

The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival runs Jan. 8-18 at Stage 773, 1225 W. Belmont Ave. The schedule tonight includes 12 shows on four stages, running at 8, 9 and 10pm. Tickets are $15 per show, $37 for a one-night pass, or $150 for a festival pass.
