(Mini) Lusophone Invasion
This week, and apparently coincidentally, two Grammy-nominated stars of the musical Lusophone (Portuguese-speaking) world descend on Chicago for separate performances. Both women are also apparently here to show that Lusophones are hotter than the rest of us.
Tuesday evening at the Harris Theatre, Mariza performs old-world Fado, Portugal's answer to flamenco or the blues. Slow, mournful and usually accompanied by guitar, Fado was what the working-class sang in the old taverns of Lisbon. The music is beautiful, but slow, so don't take a swig of Nyquil before going. You may have seen Mariza perform at Live8 in 2005, the series of concerts benefiting global-anti poverty programs. $45-55-65, Harris Theatre, 205 E.Randolph, 312.334.7777.
From the other side of the pond, the Brazilian indie singer-songwriter Céu performs at the Old Town School of Folk Music on Wednesday at 8:30PM. Her music feels tropical, breezy and sexy, like something you might hear at Starbucks. Oh, wait, you probably have, since it was released by the coffee chain last spring. Free (reservations required), The Old Town School of Folk Music Auditorium, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave., 773.728.6000.
