Nothin' from nothin' means somethin' - FREE shows at the Chicago Cultural Center

Finally answering the age-old musical question, "Whaddya want for nothin'?", the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs gives you eleven juicy slices of avant-garde music shenanigans at the Chicago Cultural Center (77 East Randolph Street) in the Claudia Cassidy Music Theater for eleven easy payments of just $0 each. That's right...eleven shows, and not so much as a gentle love-tap to your wallet! Shows start February 19, and continue on through May 21, most at 7 p.m., with one Saturday afternoon show (the March 22 event) at 1 p.m.

Over the next several months, Transmission will offer individual show listings for each event, but in the meantime, here is a master schedule to get the ball rolling:

- Tuesday, February 19: Daniel Levin's Black Bear, featuring 'cellist Levin in a quartet with bassist Nate McBride, drummer Frank Rosaly, and saxophonist Greg Ward.

- Wednesday, February 20: Pandelis Karayorgis (piano) & Ken Vandermark (reeds)

- Thursday, March 13: Bassist Ben Allison with his quintet, Man Size Safe

- Saturday, March 22 (1 p.m.): Performance of 2007 composition In Pursuit by Latin American-themed saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his group

- Tuesday, March 25: A jazz/poetry/hip-hop/jazz bouillabaisse from Dapp Theory

- Thursday, March 27: Bassist Drew Gress, member of many a top-flight Tim Berne ensemble, here features Berne in his own group 7 Black Butterflies, along with trumpeter Frank Alessi and Berne regulars Craig Taborn and Tom Rainey

- Tuesday, April 8: Chicago's own Michael Hartman and TV Pow, long-time purveyors of multi-laptop dronescapes

- Tuesday, April 22: Afro-cuban free jazz from the Sonic Liberation Front

- Wednesday, April 30: Chicagoan Jason Stein (bass clarinet) fronts trio Locksmith Isidore, with fellow Chicagoan Jason Roebke on bass and New York drummer Mike Pride on drums

- Monday, May 5: Trombonist Steve Swell (if you followed underground jazz in the '80s and '90s, probably at least 1/5th of your collection features this guy) and saxophonist Gebhard Ullman (no stranger himself to the recorded medium, having laid down 20 albums) team up with drummer Barry Altschul and bassist Hill Greene as the Ullman/Swell 4Tet

- Wednesday, May 21: Coin Coin, a multi-ensemble work by saxophonist and composer Matana Roberts, pays tribute to 10 generations of great African (and African American) music

To reiterate: Free. Downtown. Free. Go.
