Immediate Sound Turns Two
Immediate Sound, the series curated by Umbrella Music presenter Mitch Cocanig and musician/presenter Ken Vandermark, has been successfully putting on concerts every Wednesday for the past two years at the Hideout. To celebrate two years of presenting top notch music that is often marginalized by traditional media outlets and mainstream culture, they are hosting a special Friday and Saturday night program of music this Friday, April 25th and Saturday, April 26th.
On Friday the 25th, there will be three unique sets of music that involve the members of the New York based Jewels and Binoculars. Jewels and Binoculars are best known for their unique explorations of the music of Bob Dylan in a jazz setting. Their 2007 release Ships with Tattooed Sails is a great document of what they do, and it features guitarist Bill Frisell appearing as a special guest on three tracks. Check out a recent review in the New York Times to get a sense of what they do live.
The first set will engage J&B bassist Lindsey Horner and reeds player Michael Moore in a quartet with local musicians Fred Lonberg-Holm and Mike Reed. The second set will be a duo of Michael Vatcher and Ken Vandermark, and the third set will be a performance by Jewels and Binoculars, exploring the Bob Dylan material they have embraced as their own. In between sets, DJ John Corbett will spin music from his massive, eclectic collection.
On Saturday the 26th, AACM member and Velvet Lounge proprietor Fred Anderson will make an appearance at the Hideout with bass superhero Harrison Bankhead. Their 2007 duo release on Ayler Records entitled The Great Vision Concert documents the incredible musical rapport these two musicians enjoy, and which is even more potent in person.
The second set will debut a new large ensemble led by Ken Vandermark called Index Orkest, featuring a bevy of local talents. If you're familiar with Ken Vandermark's music you know that there's no way to predict what the music will sound like, but it's guaranteed to be interesting and well played given the musicians participating.
Ken Vandermark and Mitch Cocanig will handle the between set DJ'ing duties, and for the late night crowd on Saturday, the Hideout Saturday Night Dance Party features "Arthur & Brenner Present- Stray Dogs Runnin': Deep Down Sounds."
Jewels and Binoculars, Ken Vandermark, Fred Longberg-Holm and Mike Reed play Friday the 25th, Fred Anderson, Harrison Bankhead, and Index Orkest play Saturday the 26th. Doors at 8 PM, music starts at 9 PM, and the cover charge is $12.
