Liveblogging the Big Shoulders Ball

Transmission had a couple friends head to D.C. for the Inauguration festivities and of course they were excited to visit The Black Cat to check out the Hideout's curated Big Shoulders Ball. Tonight's entertainment includes the following exciting lineup (lineup times EST):

Judson Claiborne (7:30)
Freakwater (8:00)
David "Honeyboy" Edwards (8:30)
Icy Demons (9:10)
Ken Vandermark (9:35)
Tortoise (10:00)
Andrew Bird (10:30)
Thomas Frank (11:00)
Waco Brothers (11:05)
Ted Leo (11:30)
Eleventh Dream Day (12:00)
Jon Langford w/ Sally Timms (12:30)

(Liveblogging times Central)

7:05pm Lindsay Banks: The line-up has "...and more." at the end. Please let it mean what I think it means

7:08pm Lindsay Banks: It appears that the folksy band Freakwater followed the Thrift Store formal dress code. Awesome.

7:15pm Lindsay Banks: Excellent folk rendition of Signed, Sealed, Delivered for Freakwater to finish with. Showing love for Stevie.

7:30pm Lindsay Banks: Just ran into @joegermuska from chicago! Not wearing thrift store formal.

7:50pm Lindsay Banks: Honeyboy Edwards doesn't seem to be capturing the crowd's attention...at least not around me.

7:55pm Lindsay Banks: Wipe-out number 2 on this elevated platform back here. Watch your step, folks!

8:15pm Lindsay Banks: I'm enjoying Icy Demons style mix. Tambourine adds nice touch says @PlannerAnnie

8:23pm Lindsay Banks: If only they had a ukelele...no idea if I spelled that right.

8:32pm Lindsay Banks: Jazz friend Dan says upcoming artists will be covering saxaphonist Sun Ra who does avante garde spacey jazz.

9:04pm Lindsay Banks: Guy next to me just professed his love for Weird Al Yankovic...he's from Ohio.

9:15pm Lindsay Banks: Strong entrance from Tortoise...who I've never seen before, so this is cool. A Bird-fellow LFHS alum -is next.

9:33pm Lindsay Banks: Susan says that last song was spy movie music meets pink floyd.

9:38pm Michelle Meywes: Venue is pretty cool. Big room. Cool little sitting area in back. And the big Obama poster is here!

9:39pm Michelle Meywes: Tortoise is already playing. The thing started at 7:30, hope i didnt miss too much.

9:40pm Michelle Meywes: Yo yo jeff parker!

9:42pm Michelle Meywes: The Bird has arrived! Shut up, he's playing with tortoise!

9:44pm Lindsay Banks: So I think that Freakwater just joined Tortoise on stage..

9:44pm Michelle Meywes: Just saw Tim Tuten, he's in hogheaven right now :)

9:48pm Lindsay Banks: I believe that Andrew Bird has also joined the group on violin. Nice

10:00pm Lindsay Banks: Managed to get up front. Guy behind me just requested the song he's playing...'not animal'

10:05pm Michelle Meywes: I heart AB. His voice is amazing

10:10pm Lindsay Banks: Join us in the whistle-along...

10:14pm Lindsay Banks: Last song by Bird. A VIP pass just fell onto my wrist. woah.

10:59pm Lindsay Banks: Hmmm...is waco brothers done yet?

11:02pm Lindsay Banks: Although the gold sequin dress lady is really enjoying this 'i fought the law' rendition...

11:04pm Lindsay Banks: So Ted Leo is playing with Waco brothers, but I think I prefer the Pharmacists.

11:12pm Lindsay Banks: So much as I want to love Ted Leo, I think he needs the back up band to complete him.

11:25pm Lindsay Banks: Sitting behing a singer from Waco Brothers. No further comment.

11:27pm Lindsay Banks: I don't know this song, but it's much more solo-appropriate. You don't feel the absence of his band.

11:30pm Lindsay Banks: Oh yeah, I did meet Andrew Bird in the VIP room. He was very polite.

11:31pm Lindsay Banks: It's a bad sign when between-set 'Build Me Up Buttercup' draws more excitement from the crowd than your last song.

11:37pm Lindsay Banks: Blah blah blah ... dreams blah blah. Ok, next band.

11:41p Lindsay Banks: 11th Day Dream has drummer with cool Pippy Longstocking braids.

11:42 Michelle Meywes: Tim is drunk. And yelling.

11:42 Michelle Meywes: Hello Waco Brothers. Im not going to talk much about you.

11:44 Michelle Meywes:You can tell the people that came on the Hideout bus bc they are the only ones dressed up for the "ball"

11:48 Michelle Meywes:Eleventh Dream Day!

11:49 Lindsay Bans: I think it's strange that the show is ending with a virtually unknown band.

11:49 Michelle Meywes: Can't stand this band. Going downstairs.

11:52 Michelle Meywes: Back upstairs. Really cleared out!

11:53 Michelle Meywes: Tim still wasted. And yelling but hell yeah. Obama will be president TODAY

11:55 Michelle Meywes: I like this band. But i forgot the name!

11:57 Lindsay Banks: The @chicagoist photographer is to my left. Yes, we are that close.

12:02 Lindsay Banks: Ok. Waco Bros. dude that was sitting in front of me b4 is back onstage. Not so bad. :)

12:08 Lindsay Banks: 11th Day drummer chick rocks.

12:12 Lindsay Banks: Sarah LeeTimms (i may have messed her name) is back. I spied A Bird walking behind curtains

12:13 Lindsay Banks: Ted Leo just jumped onstage...!

12:13 Michelle Meywes: Wonderland!

12:22 Lindsay Banks: So the "and more" is prob not what I had hoped but this artist crossover is awesome!

What are the chances of these technical problems being fixed? I would love to be able to see more, I couldn't make it to D.C.

Stephanie / January 19, 2009 10:36 PM

Man, this is making me so jealous.

remblues / January 20, 2009 3:25 PM

"8:32pm... saxaphonist Sun Ra..."

Sun Ra played neither saxaphone nor saxophone -- he played piano and keyboards.

Mark / January 21, 2009 10:07 AM

Wow, what is this, music reviews by people that dont like music.?

"I think it's strange that the show is ending with a virtually unknown band." Really? This shows a real lack of knowledge as to the Chicago music scene.

Hassan Chop / January 21, 2009 3:11 PM

Ditto what Mark & Remblues said.

Andrew / January 21, 2009 4:06 PM

Well, do keep in mind that our correspondents were a) at a loud, crowded concert and b) possibly drunk.

Michelle Meywes / January 21, 2009 9:08 PM

For the record, some of my tweets weren't coming up in order. I really liked Eleventh Dream Day.

Mixing Sounds: The Chicago Music Commission

By Sheila Burt

On a nippy Monday evening in late February, about 125 young musicians are sitting inside a small room at the Chicago Cultural Center. With no instruments in the room or anywhere in sight, the artists aren't here to perform or write new songs. Instead, they're all waiting to learn the key answer to one question — How the heck do I get a gig booked outside of Chicago?
