Biggest Mouth: Campus Clash Preview: Roosevelt University

Biggest Mouth pink.jpgThe Biggest Mouth: Campus Clash talent contest takes place tomorrow night at Metro and will put finalists from Columbia College, DePaul University and Roosevelt University up against each other to find out "who has the biggest mouth in Chicago."

Earlier today we met the finalists from Columbia College, now let's get to know the contestants from Roosevelt University:

Spencer Curnutt

What: an "Ode to Billy Joel" music

How: Spencer is a self taught piano player who has always been attracted to Billy Joel's music. He learned his first Joel song from his dad; "I sat down with him and watched him play "Piano Man" and I said 'scoot over I can do that' and sure enough with a little practice I was able to play it."

Why: Spencer and Vinny arranged the melody for Tuesday's performance.
"I am a songwriter because there is no greater feeling of creating something you're proud of that touches other people."

Who: Lantern (AKA CRACKhead) - Vox, beats, hallowed butchery; Adam Soupafunk" W. - Guitar, keys, percussion; Craig "C-money" Hauge - Bass Guitar, MC Mike Murda - Drums/Percussion; Sammy Sax - Saxophone; DJ kZa - Turntables, percussion

What: Political, High Energy Hip-Hop/Punk

How: Four guys from all around Chicagoland came together through separate chance meetings to bring the world their intense version of live, high intensity hip-hop.

Why: "As far as change goes, we walk the walk as well as talk the talk. We are currently sponsored by No Sweat Apparel, and have played at countless benefits, rallies, and protests."


Kris Cortez

What: Pop/R&B

How: Kris started singing and performing at the age of 7. His musical influences include Motown Legends Jackson 5 and Temptations along with other artists like Brian McKnight, John Legend, John Mayer, Marc Broussard and Pink.

Why: "My performance/music style is that I enjoy doing an acoustic/stripped down cover version of a pop song--Adding a twist on to it making it my own."


Killeen McClowry
Killeen McClowry.jpgWhat: solo singer

How: Killeen has been singing before she could talk.

Why: "Music to me is a story that needs to be shared with the world. I think everyone can connect with some form of music, and my goal at the show is to share my song's story."


Sophie's Choice
Who: Sophie Grimm - singer, Amy Orman - dancer and choreographer, with dancers Katie Huff, Amanda Miller and Tiffany Taylor

What: a touch of musical theatre

How & Why: Singer Sophie Grimm, who hails from the Twin Cities, has been performing with her family for her whole life and met the rest of the group in college. The dancers come from all around the world and have years of experience in all different styles of dance. They hope to make you "laugh, smile and tap your feet the whole way."


When? Biggest Mouth: Campus Clash takes place Tuesday, May 5. The show starts at 6:30pm and tickets are free. The Metro is located at 3730 N. Clark St. 18 & up.

She's Money

When talking musical influences with Helen Money, it's easy to forget her instrument of choice: cello. She references Bob Mould's Beaster, with its wall of sound and intense, thought-obliterating guitar work. She speaks of The Who and all the crazy rock bands she was exposed to in the '80s. "The stuff I like sounds like life or death," she reasons. And this coming from a woman with a picture of Jimi Hendrix taped to her cello case like he's a saint.
