Don't Shy From These Scars

jaxx.jpg The UK electronic/house duo Basement Jaxx hasn't played the US in many years, but a short North American DJ tour to promote their new album Scars visits the Congress on November 6. As is the case with Basement Jaxx's schizophrenic electronic albums, their DJ sets tend to be on the wild side. From reggae classics to their own remixes to the latest bangers, it doesn't really matter what they play because it's all for the sake of a party. And you can be part of that party because Transmission's giving away a pair of tickets for it, courtesy of Cold Grums. Be the first to email contests@gapersblock.com with "RAINDROPS" in the subject line and you'll could be our winner. Update: We have a winner! Congrats to Tracy!

Toronto's MSTRKRFT and Berlin's Modeselektor open with live sets. A cavalcade of Chicago DJs will also be performing. The show is November 6th, doors at 7PM, 17+, and $26.50. The Congress is at 2135 N Milwaukee.

She's Money

By Kara Luger

When talking musical influences with Helen Money, it's easy to forget her instrument of choice: cello. She references Bob Mould's Beaster, with its wall of sound and intense, thought-obliterating guitar work. She speaks of The Who and all the crazy rock bands she was exposed to in the '80s. "The stuff I like sounds like life or death," she reasons. And this coming from a woman with a picture of Jimi Hendrix taped to her cello case like he's a saint.
