Judson Claiborne Record Release @ The Hideout 3/5
In the front flap of Time And Temperature, the newest release by Judson Claiborne there is a quote from relationship expert Daphne Rose Kingma. "We tend to think of relationships as static, as if we could just get into them, assume a position inside them and then continue to hold it, essentially without changing forever, world without end. But in fact our relationships are fluid, vivid, mercurial, and constantly changing."
We are all in the midsts of change and transition even if we refuse to admit it to ourselves. Sometimes we fight the process thinking that if we could just stay in the places we are, even if we are not comfortable, that all will be well. Time And Temperature is all about transition and understanding that change is part of life. This is part of growing up and I think this is an album with a very mature viewpoint and gripping honesty about letting go of what we feel we need. The of the band name itself was said by lead man Christopher Salveter to be a reclamation of a name given to him by his father, or maybe a new way of living through changes as the songs represent.
The album starts with the remarkable "Twilight Spirit" a song that lifts and plunges lyrically and melodically with a bittersweet croon. (If the voice sounds familiar, you might recall Christopher from local band Low Skies.) "Song For Dreaming" follows and helps set a somber mood with one of the saddest songs I have heard in recent times. "Oh How We Change" opens with brilliant instrumentals between verses that gives time to digest the harsh message of loss. Not one of these ten songs disappoints or lingers. They soar and carry the message that time moves faster than we do and we have so little to do what we will with it.
Judson Claiborne plays a record release show at the Hideout this Friday. Also playing is jazz influenced rock band Sonoi who releases their self titled album in April. Eiren Caffall opens. The music starts at 9. The Hideout is located at 1354 W. Wabansia. $8. (773) 227-4433.
