Photos/Review: Josiah Wolf @Schubas Tavern 5/21/10
Josiah Wolf may be more stripped down and folky than the band he's more well known for taking part in with his brother Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf. Why? may be more of a band people follow at the moment but that should not diminish the indie folk loveliness of Josiah Wolf's solo material. Oddly, Josiah Wolf looks like a cross between Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals and José González His songs are neither that quirky nor as intricate respectively. However, they seem just as sincere and worthwhile.
Playing with Liz Hodson, the two piece last night tried to fill in for multiple elements of the band. Hodson's vocals fitted well with Wolf's making some nice male-female harmonies and adding a level of depth and feeling to the lyrics. Hodson also played bass and xylophone while Wolf played both guitar and drums, at times simultaneously. It was quite a feat to witness as they filled in the crucial elements.
Even so, their set was fairly low key. Wolf joked about how he was in his fifties and appeared to be in good spirits throughout their unfortunately shorter 45 minute set. He seemed comfortable with Hodson and their sense of timing was well matched. The pair played songs from his 2010 release Jet Lag as well as covers, most notably "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone" originally written by Bill Withers. At the end of the set, however, what fans gained by attending was probably more of a sense of the personality behind Josiah Wolf and the sense of him as an individual with interesting compositions all on his own.
