Paranormal Sighting: Alt-Folk Ghosts Grandeurs Haunt Chicago's Bars
Chicago's Grandeurs are a group out to prove the power of whispers. The quietly seductive alt-folk they play is out to prove the power of speaking softly. Grandeurs achingly slow songs hypnotically entrance listeners into their world of dark bars at 4am.
Grandeurs debut untitled EP trends a path between the baroque storytelling of Dan Bejar and the evocative visuals of Mogwai. Each song builds on a cocktail of weariness and intensity. On "Heavy Country" The Vocals eek out confessions over a bed of acoustic guitars, cinematic reverb and subdued piano. "Sleep Debt" with it's a steady minimized kick drum and spectral guitars is a hidden pop gem originally broadcast from a New Mexico AM radio station in 1940s come back to the earth after bouncing off the moon. EP closer "Latecomer" unfolds as a half time lost soul song of heavy hearts.
Grandeurs have two shows coming up. Color Card will join them at Cole's Bar tonight. The show is 21+, starts at 10pm, and has no cover. Cole's Bar is located at 2338 N. Milwaukee. On Wednesday March 28 Grandeurs will open for psychedelic kraut rockers Woodsman at The Empty Bottle. The show is 21+, starts at 9:30pm, and is $8. The Empty Bottle is located at 1035 N. Western Ave.
