Contest: Field Report @ SPACE, 3/5
Field Report, though newer to the music scene, is not a fledgling group. Its members have all been submerged within the music world long before their self-titled album debut was released this past year. Deyarmond Edison was lead singer Chris Porterfield's first musical endeavor, formed with four other musicians, one of which was Justin Vernon. The group released one album, Silent Signs, in 2005, and the following year, Porterfield decided to stay behind as the group relocated to North Carolina. Deyarmond Edison eventually split into three folk crooner outfits: Bon Iver, Megafaun, and Field Report.
Porterfield remained in Wisconsin before the onset of his own group occurred, writing songs and honing in on his folk sound. Backed by a five-piece band, he began playing shows around the Wisconsin area until he had formed Field Report, an anagram of his first and last name. With Bob Dylan's croon, the sensibility of The Avett Brothers, and the storytelling lyricism of troubadours Neil Young and Simon and Garfunkel, Field Report presents us with sweet folk ballads to warm our bodies and souls up in these lulling winter months. Take a listen for yourself below, and you also will get the chance to hear Porterfield and company for yourself this Tuesday evening at SPACE in Evanston.
Fans who'd like to check out the show for free (along with a friend), just email us at contests@gapersblock.com with the subject line "Porterfield" to be in the running to win a pair of tickets. We'll pick a winner by 3pm today.
