Reggie's Music Joint Launches 'Wax On Wax Off' Series

5 Sex On Records.jpgWhat does a Chicago record nerd have to look forward to after April? The one-two punch of the CHIRP Record Fair and Record Store Day during consecutive weekends in April is probably the happiest time of year for vinyl collectors. But now it's gone.

Fortunately, Reggie's Chicago is trying to stoke Chicago's vinyl fever well beyond April and into the summer months with its new weekly Wax On Wax Off series.

Starting May 8, Wax On Wax Off will feature amateur DJs and music fans interested in sharing gems from their own rare, unusual, or just plain killer record collections in 20-minute slots at Reggie's Music Joint. Call it a record collector's open-mic night of sorts.

According to Reggie's booking agent Elle Quintana, Wax On Wax Off is open to anyone, regardless of experience or taste in music.

"We're looking for vinyl junkies to astound us with rare tracks, new music, old classics and who knows what," Quintana said.

After a few trial runs in February, Quintana said the concept for Wax On Wax Off became hugely popular.

"We've had everything from jazz, blues, punk, metal, to weird electro dancy stuff," she said.

In addition to 20-minute slots, each Wax On Wax Off night will feature a special guest host from the local music scene. The role of the host, according to Quintana, is to help guide the evening and encourage conversation and engagement between the DJ and the crowd.

"They'll kind of encourage the person to talk about their records, what this album or song means to the them, or where they got it if there's an interesting story about that," Quintana said.

Anyone who participates in a 20-minute DJ slot will also receive 50 percent off their tab at Reggie's Music Joint, as well as a discount at the Record Breakers store upstairs.

Quintana said she hopes the Wax On Wax Off series becomes an outlet for music fans to connect with each other and share music.

"I personally want to see people getting together, swapping records, making new friends, and sharing music," she said. "It's a chance for people to share some really rare and special stuff they have with other people that will actually appreciate it."

Here is the list of guest hosts through June 19:

May 8 - Jill Hopkins, CHIRP Radio

May 15 - Devin Miller

May 22 - Shane Merrill

May 29 - Ron Platzer, Liars Club

June 5 - Rory Lake

June 19 - Jimmy Burns, local blues musician

Anyone interested in signing up for a 20-minute DJ slot can RSVP to rsvpreggies@gmail.com.
