Preview: Chandler London, ShowYouSuck & ProbCause @ Empty Bottle 8/17
Chicago has emerged as a central force in hip-hop, incubating rappers on the ascension such as Sasha GoHard and Chief Keef while at the same time acting as a homeland for established legacy rappers such Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco.
With that said, our friends over at Vocalo are putting on a rap show at the Empty Bottle this Saturday. They're showcasing three rappers that personify the increasingly diverse and complex ideals of the modern Chicago rapper who are all on the verge of potentially being a next big thing; Chandler London, ShowYouSuck, and ProbCause.
Chandler London
Chandler London is based in Pilsen. He finds himself inspired the cinematic surrealism of Michel Gondry and Luc Besson's The Fifth Element as well of the relentless intensity of DMX's It's Dark and Hell is Hot and early 2000's Ruff Ryder-era NYC rap. In fact, the title of his latest mixtape, Science of Sleep, is an homage to the Gondry film of the same name which you can check out here. Check out his single, "The Drug3.3."
ShowYouSuck
ShowYouSuck tries very hard to be the rap game Beavis and Butthead which he does pretty well, so shoutout to him for that. His One Man Pizza Party series of mixtapes fuse rap, house, and drill aesthetics together and have taken him from another rapper trying to get heard to one of Spin Magazine's "50 Best Things at SXSW 2013." His latest mixtape, One Man Pizza Party: Volume 4 was recently released and can be heard here. Check out his single, "Slice After Death".
ProbCause
A few years ago, ProbCause won a competition to play at North Coast and has since played the festival since. In addition to playing clubs throughout town, he has toured the country in support of artists that range from Big Sean and Steve Aoki. He has released a steady stream of music, most notably his The Recipe series of mixtapes. In the middle of all of this, he's currently studying at the Art Institute. ProbCause sounds like he's heavily been influenced by Minneapolis hip-hop collectives such as Rhymesayers or Doomtree. This is unsurprising because he is working on a collaborative project with Rhymesayers affiliate and Chicago's own, Psalm One. His latest mixtape, The Recipe: Volume 2 can be heard here. Check out his new single, "Flex."
Chandler London, ShowYouSuck, and ProbCause are playing this Saturday, August 17th at Empty Bottle as part of Vocalo's Phenomenal Rap Show. The show is 21+, tickets are $6 and doors are at 8:30pm. Empty Bottle is at 1035 N. Western Ave.
