Photos/Review: The Districts @ Park West 10-16-14
The Districts may have only played 35 minutes in their opening set for Temples Thursday night but it was none stop energy. The Pennsylvanian four piece is composed of two guitarists which helps emphasize the melody lines and enhances the energy of the rifts and pedal effects. Additionally, a bassist, and bombastic drummer add to the overall effect. At any given point, all members except the bassist may be providing vocals but all four seen strongly invested, especially their lead singer, Robby Grote.
With just one full length album, Telephone, and a 2011 EP, Kitchen Songs, it's difficult to say whether the band's current sound won't evolve and change over their hopefully long career. At this point in time, they fit quite strongly within the Indie rock genre with Grote's vocals a little raspy and a touch whiny and vulnerable, a but like a hyperactive and younger version of Modest Mouse.
Honestly, one of the most astounding things is to watch the band move across the stage. Grote stopped a couple of times in order to tie his shoes but otherwise thrashed and flailed. It's one thing to be young and brimming with life and possibilities in a rather intense way. But, on another remarkable level, it's pretty fantastic to witness this sort of motion without hearing any drop in tempo or chords missed in their song playing. The Districts show a great deal of potential as a live band and hopefully their upcoming releases will give them even more material to shine with!
