Chelsea Wolfe @ Thalia Hall 9/1/2015
Chelsea Wolfe is no stranger to creating a distinct mood of rich velvety darkness. She accomplishes this with her recorded music and her live performance is always filled with a sense of an accomplished artist who has a profound sense of self to guide her and fills the air with a melody and texture that isn't vanquished until probably months after.
This performance at Thalia Hall was the first time many in Chicago saw the live birth of songs off of her 2015 album Abyss which somehow succeeds in being an even heavier album that her 2013 Pain is Beauty release. The songs can sneak up on you and pound you, leaving you somewhat breathless. Seeing her live makes one feel like you've witnessed something magical and also survived seeing something tragic you can't quite name.
This evening saw an even more impressive song presentation and fully realized set, especially after some very minor sound difficulties. Wolfe's vocals alternated between haunting and swooning with powerful command. The band played for nearly 90 minutes and highlighted the songs from their last couple of albums with the special treat of Russian Circles joining them for an encore.
