Pulling Strings: For Classical Music in Chicago, You Got a Guy - September 2015
Throughout the month of September, there are an array of classical music offerings located throughout Chicago, promising to be an unforgettable experience.
Collaborative Works Festival
The Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago (CAIC) kicks off its season with the fourth annual Collaborative Works Festival, now a staple of Chicago's vocal music scene. The four-day festival brings some of the finest recital singers in the world to town for a series celebrating the oft-overlooked genre of art song. Italian bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni headlines in the opening solo recital of songs by Franz Schubert, Vincenzo Bellini, Stefano Donaudy, and Paulo Tosti. In two salon concerts exploring American art song, sopranos Nicole Heaston and Laquita Mitchell, and Tenor Nicholas Phan, perform music by Charles Ives, Ned Rorem, Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and Leonard Bernstein. You won't get closer to better singing all year.

New Music Chicago: 10-Year Birthday Bash
Hear a cross-section of the city's top composers and new-music specialists on one stage. New Music Chicago has become an indispensible resource as Chicago's new-music scene has emerged from the underground; this anniversary celebrates the thriving community that is now receiving top billing around the city. Hear music by August Read Thomas, Kyong Mee Choi, Seth Boustead, Amos Gillespie, and others performed by Ensemble Dal Niente, Fulcrum Point New Music Project, Gaudete Brass Quintet, cellist Herine Coetzee Koschak, violinist Andrew Williams, and more. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door. Friday, September 11, 7:30pm. Pianoforte, 1335 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
Ensemble Dal Niente: Canciones
The contemporary music powerhouse of Ensemble Dal Niente opens its tenth season with a wild program from its summer tour of Central and South America. Five out of the six works on the program will receive United States premiere performances, including the music of Federico Garcia-De Castro (Columbia), Andres Carrizo (Panama), Rodolfo Acosta (Columbia), Francisco Castillo Trigueros (Mexico), and Jimmy Lopez (Peru); Argentinian Marcelo Toledo's work for large chamber ensemble will be heard in Chicago for the first time. The wide-ranging concert will feature stories and images from the musicians and composers about their experience on tour. Admission is free. Sunday, September 20, 2pm.
