Get on Your Horse and Ride!

daytrotter_red-back.jpgWith the weather finally starting to turn around, the pools starting to be filled again, the schools finally freeing all of the young minds, and the mosquitoes still in slumber, there is no better time for a road trip. Now that you have traded in your SUV for that Prius, you are no longer concern with gas prices. What’s that, there is a five month wait for the Prius? Well I am sure the fine folks over at Daytrotter would suggest horseback as a suitable way to arrive at any of their upcoming shows.

Daytrotter is one of the premier live music websites around. Combing indie music, well-conducted interviews, and weekly in-studio performances, they are one of the best music sites in Illinois. Their studio is based in Rock Island (3 hrs outside of Chicago), and to promote their cause and quality indie rock they have invited a string of bands to play at Huckleberry’s Pizza Parlor (223 18th St, Rock Island, IL 61201).

There latest set of shows kicks off tonight with the LA trio, A Faulty Chromosome @ 7:00pm.

afaultychromosome_1.jpgComplex album title, hand drawn liner notes with little artistic illustrations, lengthy song titles, referencing water-damaged Mister Rogers’s records… A Faulty Chromosome’s debut album, As An Ex-Anorexic’s Six Sicks Exit,… (self-released, 2/08), had all of the trappings a pretentious indie release. The lo-fi sound, the primitive electronics, and the sing-a-long choruses, the listener may not have known whether or not to take them seriously. However, in reading the liner notes and seeing all of the people they thank, and releasing how long it took them to record this album you realize that they are an honest hard-working band. The songs are catchy and mysterious, you find yourself dancing in confused patterns and then feeling like hiding under the table. Also in the liner notes is this line, “Sorry that it wasn’t recorded better.”, a statement that tells the listener there are bigger and better projects just around the corner. You can stream their album here.

The Tunnel Musicians of Chicago

By Brian Leli

The tunnel musicians of Chicago can be heard amid the roar of trains. Depending who you ask, there are only four performance-permitted stops: Jackson and Lake on the Red Line, and Jackson and Washington on the Blue. Some will tell you about these four. Some will tell you there are only three. I'll tell you what time already has: where there are people, there is music.

I recently spent three nights walking through the tunnels for a closer listen. These are the sounds, and the people I heard.
