Friday Quick Links
When we're not kicking ass and taking names, we're sitting quietly in front of a computer, looking at things like this:
- Wow, Beerland. You must have some bitter SXSW stories to tell. (via Tankboy) See also, other Beerland signage. Still, I'm sure all of Austin is breathing a collective sigh this week.
- Time Out Chicago has some sweet new tunes from DFA Records for your ears.
- Time Out also notes the changes present in the just-opened Beauty Bar (in the former Sonotheque space on Chicago Ave.). There's certainly a lot more glitter.
- Loud Loop Press has an exclusive video of the new Panda Riot single "Motown Glass."
- This week, Daytrotter features Maps & Atlases frontman Dave Davison and his new venture, Cast Spells.
- You can now watch Bloodshot R&B artist Andre Williams' documentary, "Agile, Mobile, Hostile" on Hulu.
- February op-ed in the New York Times by OK GO member Damian Kulash on viral videos and music's relationship with the internet. (via Sound Opinions) (My answer: It's kind of love-hate-love.)
- Kid Sister talks about her quest for tattoos and bar-b-que in Austin.
- Have you been seeing the CHIRP Record Fair posters in your favorite local record shops and businesses? They're pretty sweet, and produced by Steve Walters over at Screwball Press (bit fan, here). If you spy one, take a photo and send it to micha(at)chirpradio(dot)org. They'll love you for it. And save your pennies, the fair takes place at the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union hall on April 10-11, 2010.
- In fact, the CHIRP Record Fair will be a great warm-up for Record Store Day on April 17th! We're compiling our lists of events and releases. Send any RSD gossip to transmission (at) gapersblock (dot) com.
- It's been a pretty great couple of weeks for White Mystery. Their self-titled debut album ended up at the very top of CHIRP's CMJ list.
- Rogers Park venue The Mayne Stage (formerly the Morse Theatre) is slated to open in late May/early June along with its restaurant space (now dubbed the Act One Cafe) and recording and rehearsal space.
- Oxford, Ohio's WOXY 97.7 FM (97X) has ceased broadcasting due to lack of funds. Bam! (The future of rock and roll?) Pop Dose has a nice tribute from a native Ohioan (via) and Chicago's own CHIRP radio has a tearful remembrance.
