Additional Details

Like the nearby demolition site, 8522 S. Burley Ave., this residence dates back to the era when industrial production was expanding throughout the Calumet region. The closest of these facilities was what would become U.S. Steel's South Works. Only three blocks away, it was launching its rapid expansion into Lake Michigan and hiring by the hundreds. After nearly uninterrupted growth through the 1960s, the plant closed nearly 20 years ago. The region has continued to decline.

One 311 call was placed regarding this building more than a year ago on January 10, 2011. At the time, the building was open and vacant.

About the series

Over the course of 2012 David Schalliol produced a photographic portrait of 100 of the hundreds of buildings threatened with demolition in the city of Chicago. Nearly all of the buildings have since been demolished. Visit the background information section for more information about the project, including definitions and links to other building resources.

The series is supported by a generous grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.
