To be Demolished

1951 N. Orchard St.

Chicago Historic Resources Survey: Included - Orange Rating [?]
Year: 1885
Architect: Unlisted
Owner: Mark Walter
Permit Description: Wreck and remove 2-story brick single-family house.
Status: Released on 9/13/11; Demolition permit issued 2/08/2012

Additional Details

This Queen Anne/Eastlake style single-family building was rated orange by the CHRS and was subject to a demolition delay. However, the delay was released in September 2011, opening the present possibility of demolition.

The owner, Mark Walter of Guggenheim Capital, owns or owned at least three other parcels on Orchard. Given the building is currently flanked by two open lots on a street where multi-million dollar houses are the norm, Walter may be assembling a multiple parcel site for new construction. It's the same pattern seen with 1950 N. Burling St., which is just one block to the west.

About the series

Over the course of 2012 David Schalliol produced a photographic portrait of 100 of the hundreds of buildings threatened with demolition in the city of Chicago. Nearly all of the buildings have since been demolished. Visit the background information section for more information about the project, including definitions and links to other building resources.

The series is supported by a generous grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation.
